Summer Undergraduate Research in Pharmacology
For over 25 years, the Department of Pharmacology has sponsored the Summer Undergraduate
Research Program for three to eight students per year. Generous funding has been
provided by the American Society for Pharmacology and Therapeutics and from the
HHMI-sponsored Summer Program in Undergraduate
Research (SPUR), which
was coordinated by the Department
The Summer Undergraduate Research Program provides "hands on" research
experience for sophomores and juniors in the area of molecular pharmacology. Although
the projects will vary, each is related to a common theme - elucidation of the molecular
mechanisms underlying the interaction of chemical agents such as drugs, hormones
and neurotransmitters with biological systems. For more information about Pharmacology,
Students spend at least ten weeks during the summer working on a research project
in a lab selected according to their interests. In addition to research, weekly
seminars are presented to acquaint the students with the broad range of research
projects in the Pharmacology Department.
The program runs from Tuesday May 31-Friday Aug. 5, 2016.
Successful applicants should have strong academic records and have completed at
least one laboratory course prior to application. Previous experience performing
independent laboratory research is not required. Those students entering their junior or senior year are given preference.
Stipends of $3,000 will be awarded to all participants. Lodging and
food allowance will also be provided.
Please note that our program has limited financial resources for supporting students who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
